Flying into Destin can be confusing for first-timers. The closest airport isn't actually called "Destin Airport" and the other options are further than most people expect. I manage two units at Pelican Beach Resort and I've had this airport conversation with hundreds of guests. Here's the complete, honest breakdown.
Short version: fly into VPS if you can get a reasonable fare. It's 17 miles from Pelican Beach and about 25 minutes. ECP and PNS are both around 50 miles and add significant drive time. A rental car is strongly recommended for most trips — see our full breakdown of who actually needs one and when you can skip it.

Interactive Route: Driving from Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) to Pelican Beach Resort via FL-85 and US-98 — 17.4 miles total.
1. Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) — The Closest Option
VPS is the airport most guests should target. Despite being called Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport, it's located on Eglin Air Force Base near Valparaiso — northwest of Destin, not adjacent to it. The drive takes you south on FL-85 through Fort Walton Beach, then east on US-98 along the Emerald Coast directly to Pelican Beach.
The route is straightforward: one main road south, one turn east, straight to the resort. No highway confusion, no toll roads. If you've never driven it before, the animated map above shows you exactly what to expect.
Note on Destin Executive Airport (DTS)
There is an airport actually located inside Destin city limits — Destin Executive Airport (DTS). However, it is for private and charter flights only. No commercial airlines operate there. If you're booking a standard ticket, DTS is not an option — VPS is the closest airport you can fly into commercially.
VPS Airport Facilities
The terminal is 116,000 sq ft with five jet bridge gates and three ground-level commuter gates. Rental car agencies are on-site (all major brands). Dining options include Emerald Coast Bar & Grill, Euro Café, and standard airport quick service. Free Wi-Fi, short and long-term parking, and a clean, uncrowded experience compared to larger Florida airports.

The Drive from VPS
Head east out of the terminal, take the ramp south onto FL-85. Stay on FL-85 south for about 7 miles through Fort Walton Beach. Turn left onto Perry Ave SE, then left onto US-98 East. Drive east on US-98 for 8 miles — Pelican Beach Resort will be on your right at 1002 US-98.
Total: 17.4 miles, approximately 25 minutes in normal traffic. Allow 35–40 minutes on peak summer Saturdays.

2. Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP)
ECP is the secondary option and worth considering when fares are significantly cheaper than VPS or you can't get a direct flight. It's east of Destin on US-98, so the drive is straightforward — you're essentially driving west along the Emerald Coast the whole way. Scenic but an hour longer than VPS.
ECP Timing Note
On peak summer Saturdays, US-98 between Panama City Beach and Destin can add 30+ minutes to the drive. Plan accordingly if flying in on a Saturday in July or August.

3. Pensacola International Airport (PNS)
PNS is the largest airport in the region with the most flight options and often the best fares, especially from major hub cities. The drive east on I-10 then south to US-98 is easy and mostly highway.
Best use case: when you find a fare $80+ cheaper than VPS and the extra hour of driving is worth the savings. For a week-long stay that math often works out.

Airport Comparison — Quick Reference
Do You Need a Rental Car?
Yes — unambiguously. Destin has no meaningful public transit and ride-share surge pricing during peak summer is brutal. All three airports have every major rental car brand on-site. Book in advance, especially for summer dates — inventory runs out and prices spike closer to arrival.
The drive from VPS on FL-85 and US-98 is easy. US-98 runs parallel to the beach the entire way into Destin — you'll see the Gulf of Mexico on your right as you approach Pelican Beach. For more detail on getting around once you're here, see our Do You Need a Car in Destin? guide.

Practical Tips for Arriving at VPS
Parking at VPS
Short-term and long-term parking are both available on-site. The lot was designed with a 300-foot security buffer between vehicles and the terminal, so it's a short walk. Rates are reasonable compared to major Florida airports. Book online in advance during peak season to guarantee a spot.
Rental Car Tips
All major agencies are at VPS. Book at least 3–4 weeks ahead for summer arrivals. Compact and mid-size cars book out fastest. If you're traveling with beach gear, luggage, and kids, size up to an SUV — you'll want the space. Return the car with a full tank — there's a gas station right before the airport entrance on FL-85.
Check-In at Pelican Beach
Check-in at Pelican Beach Resort is at the front desk in the main tower. If you're arriving before 4pm, your unit may not be ready yet — head straight to the beach and enjoy the pool and Gulf access while you wait. Resort amenities are available from the moment you arrive regardless of check-in time.
Arrival Day Tip
Saturday is peak check-in day in Destin. US-98 through Fort Walton Beach and into Destin gets congested from noon onward. If your flight lands before 11am, you'll sail through. Afternoon arrivals on Saturdays in July and August — add 20–30 minutes to the drive estimate.
Use the time at the resort to stock up groceries before unpacking. Whole Foods and Publix are both within a mile of the resort — see our Grocery Guide for full details.

Which airlines fly into Destin Fort Walton Beach Airport?
As of 2026, VPS is served by Allegiant Air (35+ destinations), American, Delta, United, Southwest, and JetBlue (seasonal nonstops to Boston and New York-JFK). Allegiant has made VPS a focus city and typically offers the best prices from secondary markets.
Should I fly into VPS or ECP for Destin?
Fly into VPS if fares are comparable — it's 30–35 minutes closer to Destin than ECP (Panama City Beach). ECP makes sense when fares are significantly cheaper or you can't get a nonstop to VPS. Both airports have rental cars on-site and similar facilities.

Are there cheaper airport options further from Destin?
Yes — Mobile Regional Airport (MOB) in Alabama is ~2.5 hours away, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta (ATL) is ~5 hours away with typically the cheapest fares in the country. Neither makes sense unless you're saving $150+ per person and genuinely enjoy a road trip. For most guests, VPS is still the right answer.
